Additional Leave (Hungary)

What is additional leave in Hungary?

Additional leave (pótszabadság) is paid leave that Hungarian employees receive on top of the base annual leave of 20 working days. The Labour Code grants it for the employee’s age, for children under 16 and in some other situations, so total leave can differ widely between employees.

Additional leave by age

Employees receive extra working days of leave from the year in which they reach each age:

  • 25: 1 day
  • 28: 2 days
  • 31: 3 days
  • 33: 4 days
  • 35: 5 days
  • 37: 6 days
  • 39: 7 days
  • 41: 8 days
  • 43: 9 days
  • 45: 10 days

An employee aged 45 or over therefore has at least 30 working days of leave a year.

Leave for children and other grounds

Parents receive extra days for children under 16: 2 days for one child, 4 for two and 7 in total for more than two, plus 2 more for each child with a disability. A child counts from the year of their birth until the year they turn 16. Other entitlements are:

  • 5 days a year for young workers, up to the year they turn 18;
  • 5 days for employees who work underground, or are exposed to ionising radiation for at least three hours a day;
  • 5 days for employees with reduced work capacity, or who receive disability support or the personal allowance for the blind.

Paternity and parental leave

Fathers are entitled to 10 working days of paternity leave, taken by the end of the fourth month after the birth or adoption, in up to two parts. Parents also have 44 working days of parental leave until the child turns three, once they have one year of service.

Additional leave when you hire through an EOR

Because the entitlement depends on age and family situation, two employees in the same role can have very different leave. With TopSource as your Employer of Record in Hungary, we collect the information needed at onboarding, recalculate each employee’s entitlement every year and track it in payroll.
