Over the last 10 or so years, I have built my career in Business Development, working for companies providing HR and Payroll services both domestically and with an international focus. I count myself fortunate to have worked for some great employers, alongside talented and committed colleagues. Just over three weeks into a new role as Global Business Development Manager with TopSource Worldwide, I can already see the calibre of business I have joined. In this open letter to colleagues, clients and partners, I describe how I already know that I am part of a winning team….

Day one in a new job can be daunting for any of us – however experienced and whatever our personality. But from the time I arrived at our Birmingham Head Office, I was put at ease. My induction had been carefully planned and a timetable of my activities for the first week was ready for me. I wasn’t immediately thrown into our buzzy, open plan office but was first welcomed with a presentation, tailored to me, in our meeting room. This was so professional and straightaway made me feel valued and thought about.

Having been given my tour of the facilities, given some time to hear from the senior team and done the first few pieces of HR housekeeping, it was time to meet the rest of the team. They welcomed me, found time to stop what they were doing to greet me and swap some friendly questions. Everyone made the effort to explain their role and I again felt that these were people who understood how what they were doing impacted someone else’s experience. Sessions for me to shadow people at their desks were spaced throughout my first week; everyone had thought about what they needed to show me and at no point did I feel like it was an inconvenience even though busy schedules meant it may well have been.

Now starting my fourth week, I have completed many induction tasks, signed my understanding of policies and been given opportunity to seek clarification on the occasions where it was needed. There is a thoroughness here, a desire to get it right, that experience shows me is not something to be taken for granted.

I now sit in that open-plan office and hear how we provide our service through my colleagues’ telephone conversations. Just today I’ve heard “I want you to know that I understand how important this is to you…”, “I haven’t encountered that before but I have a colleague who will know, can I call you back in half an hour”, “Tell me a bit more about what you want to achieve and we’ll work together to find the best way forward”. These examples of collaboration and ownership are simply how business is done here.

In just my second week with TopSource Worldwide, I contributed to a company-wide session, looking at what values are important to us and our business. We will be personable, honest, respectful, accountable and ethical. All easy to say but how can I be so sure we will live by these values? Because I have already seen every single one of these attributes displayed repeatedly by colleagues and business leaders alike.

As a Business Development Manager, talking to prospective clients daily about how we will give their employees the “white glove” experience of onboarding and ongoing HR management, it is a great feeling to know I’m part of a business that walks the talk.
