One of Europe and the world’s youngest nations, declaring independence from Serbia in 2006, Montenegro is best known for its stunning coastline, including the only true Fjord found outside of Scandinavia, the Bay of Kotor. It’s rich past is also prominent, with visible remnants of the Roman, Venetian and Ottoman Empires visible throughout Montenegro.
Since independence, Montenegro has been working towards joining the European Union. The Montenegrin economy is mostly service-based (making up 75% of GDP), with a heavy focus on tourism. Precious metals and manufactured goods making up the majority of exports.
