Frequently asked questions
Yes. We manage MPF (Mandatory Provident Fund) contributions, generally 5% each from employer and employee up to a monthly income cap, and Hong Kong’s relatively simple salaries tax system, which has no capital gains or dividend tax and a territorial basis of taxation. We also manage long service or severance payments where they apply under the Employment Ordinance.
MPF contributions above the statutory minimum, private medical insurance (given limits on public healthcare capacity for non-emergency care), and housing or transport allowances, particularly for relocating talent, are common in competitive Hong Kong offers. Hong Kong’s role as a regional finance and business hub also means candidates weigh international career mobility heavily.
Notice is generally governed by the employment contract, with a statutory minimum of seven days during the first month of probation and one month afterward if the contract doesn’t specify otherwise. Long service payment or severance payment may apply depending on tenure and the reason for termination, and Hong Kong’s Employment Ordinance sets out specific, limited grounds for lawful summary dismissal without notice.
An EOR can typically onboard within a few days to a week for MPF enrollment and contract issuance, compared with the couple of weeks needed to incorporate a Hong Kong company with the Companies Registry and register for an MPF scheme as a new employer.
While Hong Kong is relatively fast and straightforward to incorporate in compared with many markets, an EOR still removes the administrative step of MPF scheme setup and ongoing compliance, making it a convenient option for a first Hong Kong hire or for using Hong Kong as a regional base without full entity commitment.
