Frequently asked questions
Yes. We manage CCSS (Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social) contributions, roughly 26.5% of gross salary from the employer, along with progressive income tax withholding. We also calculate and pay the mandatory aguinaldo (Christmas bonus, equal to one month’s average salary), which is due to every employee by December 20 without exception.
Private health insurance (which supplements the public CCSS system and shortens wait times), life insurance, and meal or transport allowances are common differentiators in Costa Rica, a well-established nearshore destination for US companies, particularly in shared services and tech support roles.
Notice periods scale with tenure under Costa Rica’s Labour Code, from one week for under three months of service up to a month for a year or more. Severance (cesantía) is due for most terminations without just cause, calculated on a sliding scale by tenure up to a statutory cap, and Costa Rican labor courts require clear, documented cause for any termination that seeks to avoid severance.
An EOR can typically onboard within one to two weeks for CCSS registration, compared with the several weeks needed to incorporate a Costa Rican entity and register with the Ministry of Finance and CCSS.
Costa Rica’s mandatory aguinaldo timing and its tenure-based cesantía severance cap require careful, ongoing administration. An EOR handles that compliance and carries the liability, which is typically the practical route for companies building a Central American nearshore team without incorporation costs.
